Listen
to the Word "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her
shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth."
(Isaiah 53:7)

One of our most basic instincts is to defend ourselves when someone
verbally attacks us. When someone says something ugly, we jump in
to set them straight and set the record straight. We don't want
anyone questioning our reputation.
But one of the striking things
about Jesus in the hours leading up to His death was His silence.
When He was on trial, He chose not to defend Himself. Even when
the religious leaders hit Him with an endless barrage of ridiculous
false accusations, He kept His mouth shut. When He was on the
cross and everybody from the high priest to the soldiers to the loser on
the cross next door was hurling insults at Him, He remained
silent. Jesus had every right to fight back and point out that
they were the ones who were truly guilty, yet He remained silent.
