Listen
to the Word
Sitting
down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he
must be the very last, and the servant of all." (Mark 9:35)

The world says: "To be
great, you must be first. The greatest person is the one with the
most toys, or the best grades, or the nicest hair, or the biggest
house. If you want to be great, you must demonstrate that you are
above others."
Jesus says: "To be great, you must be
last. The greatest person is the one with the willing hand, and the
listening ear, and the small ego. If you want to be great, you
must put others above yourself."
Christ calls us to
stop worrying about our own status and start paying attention to the
needs of others. He calls us to view the people around us with eyes
of compassion, not eyes of competition. He calls us to arrive at
greatness by the path of servanthood.
